Cumene Hydroperoxide CHP
Cumene Hydroperoxide-CHP
Main Uses of Cumene Hydroperoxide (CHP)
Cumene hydroperoxide (CHP) is an important organic peroxide with wide applications in industrial production and organic synthesis.
I. A Key Intermediate in Chemical Production
The core industrial use of CHP is as a key intermediate in the production of phenol and acetone. In the cumene process, cumene is oxidized with air to produce CHP, which is then decomposed by acid cleavage into phenol and acetone. This is the main production route for phenol and acetone worldwide. CHP can also be used to produce chemicals such as acetophenone, α-methylstyrene, dicumyl peroxide, and benzyl alcohol.
II. A Polymerization Initiator
CHP is an important free-radical polymerization initiator used in the production of polymer materials. It is widely used as an initiator in the graft polymerization process for ABS resin production. In industrial practice, companies in China have used their own high-purity CHP in ABS production units to replace externally purchased material, substantially reducing production costs while maintaining product quality. CHP is also used as an initiator for the polymerization of acrylate and methacrylate monomers, and as a curing agent for polyester resins.
III. An Oxidizing Agent
CHP is a strong oxidizing agent with a range of applications in organic synthesis:
Olefin epoxidation: It is used to oxidize olefins into epoxides. In the Sharpless asymmetric epoxidation reaction, CHP serves as an oxidizing agent and can deliver good yields and stereoselectivity, with better results than tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP).
Sulfide oxidation: It can oxidize sulfides to sulfoxides or sulfones. Asymmetric oxidation can be achieved in the presence of a chiral catalyst, for the preparation of biologically active chiral sulfoxide compounds (such as omeprazole analogues).
Other oxidation reactions: It can be used to oxidize electron-rich aromatic compounds (such as furan) to produce unsaturated carbonyl compounds.
IV. Other Industrial Uses
CHP is also used for arsenic removal from ethylene cracker gasoline and as a polymerization inhibitor in redox systems to provide additional stability. In vinyl ester resin systems, CHP can be used as part of the curing system to eliminate the foaming that occurs when methyl ethyl ketone peroxide (MEKP) is used, while providing a wide working time.
Precautions
CHP is an organic peroxide and is thermally unstable, with a risk of explosion under certain conditions. During use, keep it refrigerated and protected from light, and avoid heating or contact with acids, reducing substances, or transition metals.
