Main Applications
Sulfuric acid has a wide range of applications, spanning numerous fields from basic chemicals to industrial manufacturing:
Fertilizer Industry: Used to produce phosphate fertilizers (single superphosphate), ammonium sulfate, and phosphoric acid; it is a key raw material in agricultural fertilizer manufacturing.
Petroleum Industry: Used in the refining and alkylation catalysis of petroleum products such as gasoline and lubricating oil.
Chemical Industry: Used as a basic chemical raw material to produce hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, and phosphoric acid, as well as synthetic fibers (viscose rayon), dyes, pigments, detergents, and pharmaceutical intermediates.
Metallurgy and Metal Processing: Used for steel pickling (to remove mill scale and rust), metal surface treatment, and non-ferrous metal smelting.
Water Treatment: Used to regulate pH, neutralize alkaline wastewater, and adjust pH in drinking water treatment.
Other Applications: Used as the electrolyte in lead-acid batteries and as a dehydrating and sulfonating agent in organic synthesis.
Packaging, Storage, Transportation, and Safety
Packaging and Transportation: Transported in dedicated steel tank trucks or IBC containers. Concentrated sulfuric acid is only mildly corrosive to steel and can be stored in steel containers. Dilute sulfuric acid is significantly more corrosive and requires rubber-lined or acid-resistant plastic containers.
Storage: Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated warehouse or tank area, away from ignition sources, heat, alkalis, flammable materials, and other incompatible substances. A storage period of no more than 36 months is recommended.
Safety Warnings: This product is highly corrosive and strongly dehydrating. Wear safety goggles, acid-resistant gloves, and protective clothing when handling. Never pour water into concentrated sulfuric acid; slowly add the acid to water to prevent violent boiling and splashing. In case of contact, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical attention promptly.
